Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t Skylights All Leak?
Properly installed skylights don’t leak. Skylight frames must be manufactured to precise measurements and then be properly integrated with your roof. We hand-craft our skylights to exacting specifications and partner with skilled technicians to ensure they are installed properly, every time, for many years of leak-free light.
Aren’t skylights drafty, and leak heat?
Skylights made from cheap materials can be drafty, yes. That’s just one reason why we manufacture our skylights from high-quality materials proven to offer outstanding insulating qualities similar to well-made double or triple-paned windows. Our most popular skylights are called curb-mounted. They have frames with two layers of aluminum ‘broken’ with an insulating layer in between. The exterior part of the frame is exposed to the weather, but separated from the interior part inside your home, ensuring it stays warm and heat isn’t transferred. We then fill the frame with either acrylic or tempered glass, with the option of having up to three layers of either material. Even in the coldest Canadian winter they let in lots of light but keep the cold out.
If I have a leaking or drafty skylight can it be repaired?
A leaking or drafty skylight can often be repaired. We’re often called in to address problems (not with our skylights!). Typically, the fix involves lifting the existing skylight out, repairing any damage around its frame, and then reinstalling it with proper integration into your roof. There are times when the skylight itself is damaged and can’t be reinstalled, at which point we can offer options for a new unit. Give us a call, and we’d be happy to come by and take a look with no charge.
I recently got a new shingles on my roof, and now my skylight is leaking. I’m fairly handy and would like to figure out what’s going on myself. What can I do about it?
Skylights should be removed during re-roofing, and re-installed so they are fully integrated as one system with the new roof. If you are getting leaking after new shingles are put on, you can do a test yourself to determine what the issue is. Go up on your roof and wrap your skylight in a tarp, using straps to secure it. Then run some water down your roof. If it leaks, you know there is a problem with the new roof – very likely that roofers did not remove the skylight and properly put the roof membrane over the skylight curb, which is part of the skylight frame that makes it one system with a roof. If it doesn’t leak there might be some damage to your skylight and it might need to be replaced. Either way, give us a call and we’d be happy to come do a free inspection.
