Mac Skylights custom manufactures skylights in our Edmonton workshop, hand-crafting each unit to precise customer specifications. We then ship to anywhere in Canada or partner with trusted installers across BC and AB to ensure our skylights are always installed right for years of leak-free warmth and light. Whether you are seeking a small port-hole to bring natural light into a dull entryway in your home or the right company to install a sprawling custom array in your new commercial building, we do that.

Over 60 Years' Experience

Why skylights? Unlike a conventional wall window skylights are never totally in the shade. They bring in up to five times more daylight than a wall window of the same size, and can distribute that light in the interior of a building as well as along the walls. Natural light is crucial for our wellbeing and healthier for our eyes than artificial light.

Whatever the application, once installed skylights welcome in abundant natural light, enhancing a building’s environment while reducing reliance on artificial lighting, saving on electrical power costs while creating a better atmosphere for your family or colleagues. Natural light from skylights helps plants (and people!) thrive, and for furnishings to be seen in their true colours.

Skylight Options

Skylights make a significant contribution to your home or business, bringing in up to five times more natural light than a vertical window to create a more welcoming environment while reducing your need for electrical lighting.

We offer two main types of skylights – curb-mounted and vinyl frame. The difference is in the type of frame and how it integrates into a roof or wall. Each has their own advantages. From there, we fill that frame with up to three layers of acrylic or tempered glass – again, each has their own advantages.

We make these skylights by hand in a variety of sizes and shapes, working with you to decide on the best options for your unique needs.

Certified Installers

We partner with skilled installers in several communities, able to ensure our skylights and plastics fit just right and remain leak-free for years to come. They are able to meet customers in most Alberta communities and across BC’s Okanagan.

Two Main Types

We offer several skylight designs with two main types of frames – aluminum and vinyl. The difference is in the type of frame and how it integrates into a roof or wall. Each has their own advantages, and both can be made in pretty much any shape and size.

Curb Mounted

Curb-mounted aluminum skylights are our most popular model for both residential and commercial applications. They can be made to virtually any regular shape, installed on virtually any roof, stand up to the elements, and offer great insulating qualities. Their frame is thermally broken aluminum, which means it is made from two sections of sturdy metal, one on the top side that is exposed to the elements and one at the base inside your building, ‘broken’ by an insulating later in between. This prevents the transfer of cold and heat, ensuring the inside frame stays at room temperature in virtually any weather.

Vinyl Frame

Vinyl frame skylights look virtually identical to curb-mounted units, but their frames are made from vinyl instead of aluminum. They don’t offer quite the same insulating qualities, though still very good. They are less susceptible to high-humidity environments, making them a good choice for rooms like kitchens and bathrooms. They’re also more economical.

Acrylic

Acrylic is a special type of plastic well-suited to this use. We heat sheets of the material in specialized machines, which softens it and allows us to shape it into domes in virtually any size and shape. We are able to do this to very precise specifications for size and slope, ensuring you get exactly what we promise. We add them to their frame in single, double, or triple layers – depending on the use and climate. We shape these domes to shed snow, ensuring maximum illumination in Canadian winters. Acrylic offers great insulating qualities and is about 20 times stronger than standard glass. Because of how this ‘glass’ is made, acrylic skylights can be made very large for unique installations

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is also far stronger than standard glass – about four times stronger. While not as strong and flexible as acrylic it is more resistant to scratching and fire, making it the right choice in some applications. It is laid flat in frames in two or three panes – much like a residential window. We can also tint it in bronze and white. Individual tempered glass skylights cannot be as large as acrylic units, but laid out together in an array they are a great option for commercial and industrial builders looking to make a statement or just bring in lots of natural light.

Glass Options

We offer the same ‘glass’ options with both frames – acrylic and tempered glass. Come talk to one of our experts about which options are best for your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Don’t Skylights All Leak?
Properly installed skylights don’t leak. Skylight frames must be manufactured to precise measurements and then be properly integrated with your roof. We hand-craft our skylights to exacting specifications and partner with skilled technicians to ensure they are installed properly, every time, for many years of leak-free light.
Aren’t skylights drafty, and leak heat?
Skylights made from cheap materials can be drafty, yes. That’s just one reason why we manufacture our skylights from high-quality materials proven to offer outstanding insulating qualities similar to well-made double or triple-paned windows. Our most popular skylights are called curb-mounted. They have frames with two layers of aluminum ‘broken’ with an insulating layer in between. The exterior part of the frame is exposed to the weather, but separated from the interior part inside your home, ensuring it stays warm and heat isn’t transferred. We then fill the frame with either acrylic or tempered glass, with the option of having up to three layers of either material. Even in the coldest Canadian winter they let in lots of light but keep the cold out.
If I have a leaking or drafty skylight can it be repaired?
A leaking or drafty skylight can often be repaired. We’re often called in to address problems (not with our skylights!). Typically, the fix involves lifting the existing skylight out, repairing any damage around its frame, and then reinstalling it with proper integration into your roof. There are times when the skylight itself is damaged and can’t be reinstalled, at which point we can offer options for a new unit. Give us a call, and we’d be happy to come by and take a look with no charge.
I recently got a new shingles on my roof, and now my skylight is leaking. I’m fairly handy and would like to figure out what’s going on myself. What can I do about it?
Skylights should be removed during re-roofing, and re-installed so they are fully integrated as one system with the new roof. If you are getting leaking after new shingles are put on, you can do a test yourself to determine what the issue is. Go up on your roof and wrap your skylight in a tarp, using straps to secure it. Then run some water down your roof. If it leaks, you know there is a problem with the new roof – very likely that roofers did not remove the skylight and properly put the roof membrane over the skylight curb, which is part of the skylight frame that makes it one system with a roof. If it doesn’t leak there might be some damage to your skylight and it might need to be replaced. Either way, give us a call and we’d be happy to come do a free inspection.
