Edmonton Expo Centre

Replacing an octagonal rooftop skylight array during a 2023 renovation of this iconic Edmonton facility.

In 2023 Delnor Construction was leading the rehabilitation of the Edmonton Expo Centre –  an iconic facility home to numerous events, sports competitions, and trade shows every year. Along with renovating a gym so it can house professional basketball, the indoor tracks, and other indoor facilities Delnor was also rehabbing the aging roof – adding solar panels and other modern features while they were at it.

Delnor asked us to rebuild the unique octagonal skylight that is part of this building’s distinctive character. Unlike a more typical configuration with skylights towards the middle of a big room, this skylight runs along the exterior wall of the Centre’s main hall, bringing in a wash of natural light that makes artificial lighting unnecessary during pretty much any daytime event. However, it had started leaking and was aging.

After an inspection, with Delnor we decided the best way forward was to replace the existing skylight with an entirely new array, properly integrated into the rebuilt roof to ensure great insulating qualities and leak-free service for many years to come.

We installed 1,000 pieces of tempered glass, each held in its own insulated aluminum frame, with curbs along each edge of the array integrating it  into the roof membrane along each edge. The skylight is 10’ wide and a total of 500’ long along its eight sides. The corners were tricky, each with its own odd angles requiring us to precisely cut many pieces of glass to demanding specifications.

This was a great project with a great partner, and we’re proud to contribute to the rehabilitation of this important community facility.
